However, examining performance indicators shows a significant gap between the “traffic rate” and the “retention rate”. This gap indicates the dominance of the “transit tourism” model over “stay tourism”; a situation in which travelers only pass through the province without interacting with its cultural, natural, and economic capacities. Although this trend has been successful from the perspective of facilitating passenger movement, it requires a strategic review and upgrade from the perspective of equitable distribution of tourism revenues in different layers of the province.

To overcome the current situation and move from the “route” model to the “destination” model, it is essential that resource utilization models change direction from a “pure service” approach to an “experience-oriented” one. Achieving this transformation requires focusing on three key axes. First, redefining stopping points on transportation routes; so that service complexes on the way move from a “stop to meet basic needs” to “permanent souvenir and handicraft bazaars.” In this model, by intelligently integrating the living arts of ethnic groups (Kurmanj, Tat, Turk and Turkmen) and organizing exhibitions of fine handicrafts in these complexes, the traveler is encouraged to engage in a “cultural and meaningful stop” instead of a temporary stop.

Second, using the “restorative tourism” model instead of traditional models. In this approach, the goal goes beyond the concept of sustainable tourism and focuses on restoring life and adding value to the destination. This model should be designed in a way that has a positive and constructive impact on the environment and the economic empowerment of local communities. Focusing on the development of eco-tourism resorts and supporting local products are the main pillars of this model. This new form of tourism not only prevents the destruction of cultural and natural heritage, but also greatly strengthens the economic resilience of villages and deprived areas of the province by creating direct employment.

Third, using digital tools to identify travelers’ needs, with the aim of intelligently introducing complementary itineraries, such as nature tourism in pristine areas of the province or health tourism, can move travelers from a state of “aimless transit” to “purposeful stays.” In fact, travel packages should be designed so that travelers feel that by stopping in North Khorasan, they are completing part of their main travel experience.

Ultimately, achieving this change in approach requires synergy between executive agencies, focusing on the two axes of “diversification of services” and “marketing of regional brands.” By following this path, North Khorasan can be promoted from a “transit gateway” to a “targeted and lasting destination” on the country’s tourism map; a path that will lead to sustainable and tangible economic growth in all aspects of the province by converting transit capacities into accommodation opportunities.

Abbas Tavakolian, head of the Tourism Services Supervision and Evaluation Department, wrote in a note: “The developments in the tourism industry in the third decade of the 21st century show that the success of a tourism destination is not measured solely by traditional indicators such as “number of passengers” or “development of physical infrastructure.” Rather, […]

[92

post-11310","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-notes
["GET
